Fresh review in the kitchen

Ok ladies, so it is friday and today calls for mentioning how to better your baking skills/techniques. Viewing articles online brought my attention to a specific book -"Baked: New Frontiers in Baking". Follow the underlined link above.

Now at quick glance the outline is great; too better yourself requires adapting to new trends, and think of baking as a fashion; it's own art per say.

Creative Cookie: Taste Buds Plus Imagination

Have you ever craved a cookie that consisted of an ingredient combination you thought was unheard of? In the baking world, nothing really is unheard of when it comes to personal taste. Let your imagination run wild and free! Sure the cookie, once it’s created my not taste the way you thought, or not good at all, but at least you would know. Don’t knock it, until you try it! I have experimented with toffee and coconut, different combinations of chocolate and even spices. Whoa, spices? Yes, sometimes to give an extra kick or to compliment flavours, certain spices, in small amounts, can play a huge roll. I encourage each and every one of you to let your taste buds and creativity take a huge roll in your baking, even if it means adding a new ingredient or replacing one or two in a already loved recipe.

Cookie Baking Tips #1: Trial and Error

Have you ever been frustrated with the way your cookies turned out after having followed a recipe down to the very last point? I know I have! I imagined and had expectations on how amazing they would come out of the oven, rich, chewy, golden brown, only to see a lump of coal that was barely edible. Ugghhh, so demotivating! I’ve learned my lessons over the years and can finally say that I have created my own method of baking cookies that guarantees a successful outcome each and every time and here’s how I did it.

STEP #1: FRESH INGREDIENTS
Check the expiration dates of your regular baking necessities. Baking powder, baking soda, milk, eggs, and even your chocolate chips. Remember that baking is a science, if even one ingredient used is not up to par, your cookies will not turn out the way you would like.

STEP #2: KNOW YOUR OVEN
When following a recipe there is usually a standard direction that looks like this: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and bake for 6-10 minutes. Well thanks, because I did that and it didn’t work. Everyone has a different oven, sure they can be the same make or have similar technology within, but all ovens heat and retain heat differently. This step takes trial and error. I personally lower the heat in my oven to 325 degrees F and bake for a minimum of 5 minutes depending on the size and density of the cookie. After 5 minutes I keep a close eye to make sure the cookies don’t burn but are still cooked. Also take the time to figure out which level rack the cookies should be baked on for best outcome.

STEP #3: TIMING IS KEY
I am not just talking about the amount of time your cookie is baked for. I was making an extensive amount of sugar cookies one year for a charitable event and I was working with one oven. I put the first batch in and voila they came out perfect. I put the second batch in and I got the same result! Great right? I put the third batch in and realized that the edges were a lot browner than the last. YIKES! I had to turn down the heat on my oven and bake for a little less time to attain my desired cookie. Now some have said, well why don’t you just get a new oven. Well firstly, I don’t have the funds to do so, secondly what would that solve. I’ve learned to work with what I have and you can too! If any of these tips help, let me know by commenting below.

Choices? Oreos or RITZ?

Dilemma

Alright, I have a dilemma. Am I the only that is struggling with this? My issue is that I can't make up my mind between mini-Oreo and mini RITZ bits sandwiches. They have been some of the hardest decisions I have make. :P Since I'm struggling to make a choice, I thought of asking if all of you had the same dilemma which is the choice between the two, which one would you pick and why? I have been a staunch Oreo person since I first ever tried it but at the same time I also love RITZ sandwiches.

Chocolate chip cookie dough

Hello all, I'm back with another update. This time, something pretty cool! I was going shopping at the nearest grocery mall. I saw this really amazing cookie dough, they are Wholly Wholesome's chocolate chip cookie and overall, many people have been giving it great reviews. If anyone is reading this, should definitely check it out.

A couple of facts:
  1. It is organic
  2. Healthy ingredients
  3. Premium price
  4. No skimping on the chocolate chips
  5. About 12-15 cookies per box.
They taste delicious, it's healthy,  easy to cook, great flavor, etc... So instead of going out and buying the same old thing, try this one out!

Let me know what you think. Overall, it gets 4 cookies out of 5 from me.  --- R.S.
